La Joya ISD Summer Bridge Students Explore Careers in Public Safety During Interactive Career Day

Mission, TX - For many incoming freshmen, the future can feel full of possibilities but difficult to envision. At Palmview High School, students from across La Joya ISD’s Summer Bridge Program were given an up-close look at potential career paths as local public safety professionals came together for an engaging Career Day designed to inspire, educate, and connect students with real-world opportunities.

The event welcomed representatives from the Texas Department of Public Safety, Palmview Police Department, Palmview Fire Department, and the Hidalgo County Sheriff's Office along with other various agencies. Through interactive displays, career presentations, equipment demonstrations, and conversations with first responders, students gained valuable insight into the many career opportunities available within public safety.

One of the day's highlights was the arrival of a Texas DPS helicopter, which provided students with a firsthand look at specialized aviation operations and generated excitement throughout the campus. Students also had the opportunity to explore emergency response vehicles, learn about criminal investigations, discover career pathways within law enforcement, and interact directly with professionals serving their communities.

"These experiences help students understand that there are many pathways into public service," said Omar Monrreal, Senior Trooper with the Texas Department of Public Safety. "Events like this allow students to learn about the opportunities available to them and see positive role models from a variety of agencies. We appreciate the partnership with La Joya ISD and the opportunity to encourage students to explore careers that can make a difference in their communities."

For other participating agencies, the event was about more than career exploration - it was also an opportunity to strengthen relationships with the next generation.

"We are here to introduce ourselves and help students learn about the many ways they can serve their communities through public safety," said Genaro Cortez, Investigations Sergeant with the Palmview Police Department. "Building trust is important, and one of the best ways to do that is by showing up, answering questions, and helping students understand the work we do. These students are the future of our community, and we want them to know we are here to support them."

The event carried special meaning for Sigifredo Moreno, Investigator with the Palmview Police Department and a 2016 Palmview High School graduate, who returned to his alma mater to share his journey..

"As a Palmview High School graduate, I never imagined myself in this role," said Moreno. "Being able to come back and share my experiences with these students is incredibly meaningful. I want them to see that there are many opportunities available to them and that with hard work and dedication, they can achieve goals they may not even be thinking about today."

The experience left a lasting impression on students as they prepare to begin their high school careers.

"I have seen so many cool things today, and getting to learn directly from police officers and firefighters has been amazing," said incoming freshman Viviana Garcia. "Seeing the DPS helicopter land and getting a firsthand look at what these professionals do has opened my eyes to opportunities I never really thought about before."

Fellow incoming freshman Joel Villarreal echoed that excitement.

"I was already excited for this event, but it turned out to be even more than I expected," said Villarreal. "My interest in a career in public safety is definitely growing after today."

The Career Day event aligns with the mission of the Summer Bridge Program, which helps students successfully transition into high school while exposing them to future educational and career opportunities. By connecting students with professionals from a variety of fields, La Joya ISD continues to support Priority 2: Empowered Graduates and Priority 3: Thriving Students under the district's Achieving Excellence Together: 2030 Strategic Plan.

As students explored helicopters, patrol vehicles, fire apparatus, and career pathways, they also gained something equally valuable - a clearer vision of what their future could become.
